Gender in Media - Bethlehem II
Name of the project: Gender in Media in Bethlehem
Period of the project: December 2005- May 2006
Funded by: World Association for Christian Communication (WACC)
Media in Palestine, as a mirror of the society, is affected by stereotypes about women and gender. Therefore, the stories shown through media to the larger community transmit the same stereotypes regarding women, enforcing them throughout the Palestinian culture.
The most effective method of breaking down such stereotypes is to transmit new ideas through the media, that will then challenge an influence the general public.
This Gender in Media project seeks to change the image of women in the Palestinian media through giving a training for 16 participants from the staff of the following local TV stations: Al Farah TV (Jenin), Baladna TV (Qalqilia), The Shepherd's TV (Bethlehem), The New Down (Tulkarem), Gama TV (Nablus), Al Majd TV (Hebron), Al Noor TV (Jericho), Al Watan TV (Ramallah).
The general goal of our project is to change the image of women in the Palestinian media. On the other hand, as a long run objective, TAM wants to establish 'gender units' in the local TV stations.
To reach our goals, we carried out an intensive training in Human Rights, Gender issues and Democracy concepts in a four days training.
The training aimed to improve the technical and ethical professional skills of the media participants, for them to integrate the gender point of view and women issues consideration in their work.
Participants were taught how to film, interview, read articles, direct and produce. Moreover, all the theories that were given to the participants were also applied in a number of practical exercises in order to be as close as possible to the reality.
During the session, the participants were asked to produce a featured story of their choice. While filming, the participants applied the new learnt concepts and were able to make 8 featured stories that discussed the following topics: The reality of Palestinian Women in the Local TVs, Violence against Children, The Handicap woman and her involvement in voluntary work, The Camera of the Mobile phones, The Non Stop Work, Learning for Adults, and The Moving Crime.
